Avandia Heart Attack Risks Lead To Side Effects Lawsuit

12/30/2009 - A local resident's lawsuit against a drug maker for not properly warning patients about how its product increases the risk of heart attacks is joining hundreds of similar lawsuits across the country.

The lawsuit, which was originally filed in the U.S. District Court in Hammond by Shelia Latta, is being moved to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, according to court records. The lawsuit claims that SmithKline Beecham Corp. failed to follow federal orders to properly warn people that its diabetes drug Avandia and similar drugs cause a 50 percent increase risk of heart attacks. According to the lawsuit, Latta, a Porter County resident, suffered a heart attack after taking Avandia.

Latta's isn't the only lawsuit against the company, though. More than 500 cases have been filed since 2007 and they are all now being tried in Pennsylvania, along with Latta's, according to a court filing.
